We often talk about work. This time, let’s change the focus and find out if IT people can relax. How do they spend their free time?
The balance in the time distribution between work and other aspects of life, or briefly – life-work balance, is essential. Even more important than we can imagine. Scientists have been studying this topic for over 50 years. The term itself was first used in the USA and Great Britain.
Keeping the balance of work and rest, time tracking, and no overtime – this is what we at GloriumTech pay special attention to. We allow our employees to work according to a flexible schedule in a balanced mode.
In addition, we conduct various games and exciting team building, sometimes even during working hours, because life at Glorium is more than work and projects.

How the Gloriumers rest
To remain productive, you should constantly learn, work hard, and find time to rest and reset. And hobbies are a great help in this.
We asked our employees if they have any hobbies and interests to which they devote their free time. Most of our team members (more than 97%) said they have a hobby. Each could choose from a list of options and indicate one of the preferred activities.
The choice was multiple, so the numbers were distributed as follows. It turned out that during non-working hours:
- 68.6% watch movies;
- about 63% do sports;
- 45.7% read books and listen to music;
- 43% play computer games and spend time in nature;
- 37% are engaged in travel, playing board games, and learning new things;
- 28.6% take a break from work by tinkering or making something with their hands.
We also asked our team members to name the hobbies that inspire them. Among them:
- volunteering and, in particular, animal volunteering;
- skydiving, cycling, and motorsports;
- yachting and water sports;
- SmartHouse and Home Assistant programming;
- grape growing and brandy production;
- writing music, poems, prose, and paintings;
- playing the saxophone and other musical instruments.
Some of our colleagues noted they had no unique hobbies. So we decided to make a small list for them and give some ideas of what you can do in your free time or during vacation.
Unusual leisure activities
- Neurography is an accessible method of art therapy. It helps to reset and improve the emotional state. Also, this activity contributes to the formation of new neural connections. It can be helpful when you need to find an original idea or solve a complex problem in a new way.
- Bird-watching is the practice of observing birds in their natural environment. It is a relatively new and popular intellectual recreation involving active bird observation. Take an interest in various aspects of their life and the desire to see as many species as possible. In time you will be able to distinguish bird species by color and song.
- Cosplay is short for “costume play.” Cosplayers transform into their favorite characters from books, movies, anime, comics, or video games. They use appropriate clothes, fashion accessories, make-up, facial expressions, gestures, signature behavior, etc. This dramatic performance unites people in a vibrant subculture, with cosplay events and competitions taking place globally.
- Oratory is the art of speaking in public. It is also the ability to express your thoughts and present yourself. It can be a beneficial hobby as it helps reveal your personality clearly and improve your soft skills, communication, and persuasion skills.
- Geocaching is a team game for searching for hidden places using satellite navigation systems. The name comes from the Greek word γεο, “earth,” and the English cache – “hidden place.” The essence of the game is that one player hides a specific “treasure” and then uses GPS to determine its geographical coordinates and share them with the search team. In turn, searchers use the received data, hints, and GPS receivers to find hiding places. Most often, they are located in areas of natural, geographical, historical, or cultural interest.
There are many different hobbies, some quite unusual and even weird. But whichever you choose, the point is to enjoy this activity.
At Glorium, we welcome balance in everything. So you will always have time for your favorite hobby. To find out more about the benefits we provide to our employees, apply here or refer a friend.
