As a modern IT company integrated into the global market, Glorium Technologies considers the most effective opportunities for cooperation.
Due to Covid19, we designed a hybrid work format that allows remote work from anywhere worldwide. We described the hybrid work of our teams in the previous article.
To continue this topic, we’d love to introduce one of its varieties, workation.

What does workation mean?
This portmanteau of work and vacation suggests combining work and rest to increase productivity, achieve better results, and balance your life. You can also find an alternative name, such as workoliday or woliday. It comes from work and holidays – a kind of working vacation that allows labor remotely and in a relaxed mode. Imagine creating code while sitting in a lounger on the beach or sending emails while sunbathing.
Does it really work? It is fair to say that the workplace is a model of work, not rest. Delving into the history of the workation trend, European corporations started implementing it as early as 2012. Then, it was a team-building format when employees traveled to another town or country for several days.
The purpose of the trip is to change the environment, reset, make friends, and work a little. We can think of digital nomads who earn a living by working remotely in different places.
How long can the workation last?
There are short, medium and long-term workation.
- The first type supposes traveling within the region, country, or somewhere close for a few days. This way, you don’t need to recover after a long journey. This option is excellent for inspiration, change, or new ideas.
- Mid-term workation is perfect for a team to get involved in the company’s strategic planning, find direction, and prepare for a successful project launch. It allows pumping up motivation and tuning in for in-depth work. It can also be a trip for the season.
- Long-term workation means a complete change of residence for several months or years. It can be related to a change of employer, relocation of a team, working on a long-term project that needs to be finished, or avoiding burnout.
How to plan workation
Traveling, enjoying beautiful places, and discovering a different culture will contribute to new neural connections and pleasant emotions. As a result, workation will positively affect work capacity. But this is only true if you prepare.
Here are some tips to get the most out of your workation.
- Choose a destination with loyal legislation for digital nomads. Be sure to learn the specifics of taxation to work legally and stress-free.
- Study the financial issue in detail. How much of your income will meet basic expenses to feel comfortable? Look for the accommodation options – their cost should not exceed 50% of the planned budget.
- Ensure a stable connection and access to the Internet at your place, as the trip still involves working.
- Pack your stuff, including the necessary equipment. Take only the essential things and cash – of course, in the local currency. Also, prepare non-cash payment options for better security.
- Learn about the destination country: cuisine, traditions, mental traits, holidays, and weather. The less improvisation, the more confident you feel. One more critical nuance: check how your work schedule matches your new time zone.
- Using social media, find a local ex-pat community or professional group where you can make acquaintances and get answers. Feeling isolated is one of the pitfalls of workation.
And last but not least: enjoy the journey and new place, and build your schedule to maintain the needed workation balance. Is it worth going somewhere if you are constantly staying near the laptop?
